Donnie Darko - Product Research.

Prelimenary Task Review.

In order to successfully complete our prelimenary task, we decided to create a short clip which was able to reflect our media skills in using different camera angles and techniques, which would appropriately fit in to the scene. We used camera angles such as low angle and long shot in our piece. We then uploaded our clip on to the computer and edited it, by merging the scenes we wanted and removing the ones we thought unnecessary to produce our final piece.

The Butterfly Effect - Product research.

The opening stars with a quote from a theory, which is followed by diegetic eery type of music, which soon fades, when the titles appear. At this point the camera is panning dark windows, which makes the viewer think that there is someone behind the window. The scene then changes pace and becomes fast as a man rushes in the room follwed by loud dramatic music which creates confusion, and the audience questions why he is running. His clothes then show the audience that he may be a patient in the hospital. As he writing , there are other voices heard in the background which suggeests that he may be running from something. The audience are then aware of what he is writing as there is a close up of the words 'Save her'. The scene then cuts to a black background which has a x ray image of a skull with a butterfly fluttering over it. As the title appears the music gets louder then fades as the film begins.

The Shining - Product research

The opening of the film starts with diegetic sounds of loud trumpets, being blown, over a calm scene of clear mountains. At this point the camera is panning at the same pace as the music which cretes a calm atmosphere. The scene then cuts to an aerial shot which gives a map like image of the scenery. There is a change in the music as it becomes more louder which creates a dramatic effect in contrast to the calm green scene. After a total of one minute the camera is behing the car, as if the audience is following the car. This makes the audience think that this is not a thriller but a more adventurous movie , however when the music begins to get eery the audience's view change.

The Silence of the Lambs - Product research

In the opening , the credits are flashed out then they are flashed back in, and at this point we begin to see a young woman in outdoor running clothing. Her clothing is contrast to the dark and humid looking forest. The non diegetic sound of her breathing and panting makes the audience think that she is trying to escape from something and running away from it. The as more titles are shown, the camera begins to move at mid angle as if the audience is following the woman. The Diegetic music of soft violin starts at a slow pace and then follows the pace of the woman running. She begins to run faster and the music becomes faster and louder. There is a low angle shot of her feet, as she climbs over a net and the audience becomes aware of the brighter forest in contrast to the dark in the beginning.

Prelimenary Task review.

For our prelimenary task, we experimented with different camera shots and angles to create an short clip. We used different angles to show different things. For example as she is walking up the stairs, the low angle shot creates suspense because you are unable to see who it is.
After we filmed this , we edited our clip in order to remove any parts we did not need. This gave us the experience of film editing and made us aware of the different things we could add to our piece.
